More About Elwood "Lefty" Longhorn
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the Louisiana Longhorns, my kin owns a perty good sized farm but farmin’ ain’t for me. I had a few years of book lernin’, which was about as much as I could stand. So as a young man in 1835, I headed north into Arkansas and Missouri and twixt the two, spent a number of years plyin’ two or three different types of trade. Now what those trades were, I’m not at liberty to say, (not that they were illegal). But to say that I’ve been a completely honest and peaceful man would be stretchin’ the truth a tad bit.
But I did meet some good folk in those two fine States. Like the Clemens family in Hannibal, Missouri. Real hospitable with a son about seven years, he was named Samuel Langhorne. I fished the Mississippi more than a time or two with young Sam and boy he loves that river. And quite the talker that one. I do believe that boy might just be somebody, some day.
When I heard they found gold in California, I decided to head West and make my riches pannin’ gold. I was hired on as a scout for a wagon train headin’ in that direction. I was also set to keepin’ the peace between settlers. Did a dang good job if I must say, I didn’t have to shoot anybody and I never got shot.
Now I wish I could say I made those riches but truth be told, I found only a small amount of gold. I did meet a group of cowboys and the ladies they kept company with: THE BLUE CANYON GANG, known throughout California and Nevada. I got wind of them in Nevada ridin’ Scout. I mean, I really got wind of them! Whew! Don’t know how those fancy ladies can stand it. Which is why I’m now a proud member! Any gang, who can get away with takin’ a bath only twice a month and still have fancy women about, is the gang for me.
